Chapter 16

Abrielle

What in the world had I done to deserve this?

Wasn’t I a good person?

I thought that I was, so why would someone drug me and slit my wrists?

Why was I being punished?

Claudia helped me out of the shower. I had lost a bit of blood, so Chad asked her to help me shower. She had covered my wrists with bags before she helped me get in. Now that I was clean and the drug was finally waning off, I could somewhat stand on my own and comprehend what was going on.

Claudia wrapped me in a towel, helped me into the bedroom, got me dressed, then put me in bed. “You need to let that heal and let the blood regenerate. Do not get out of bed for at least twelve hours, Abrielle. You need to rest.” When she moved out of the way, I noticed that the cage was out. That was weird, considering that I hadn’t seen the cage since the day CJ was born.

I had done nothing wrong, yet I knew that Chad was going to put me in that thing. He thought that I had tried to kill myself. I wasn’t in the mood to fight him, so if this was his solution to what happened, so be it.

I just hoped that he let me see Ciara and CJ sometimes.

I was resigned to take whatever punishment he doled out.

Even though this was his kingdom, and I was technically his queen, I wasn’t a fool. Even if none of this was my fault, he was going to punish me regardless.

As long as that punishment didn’t include taking Ciara and CJ away from me, I was okay.

Claudia covered me up, then within a few seconds she was locked in the cage and screaming to be let out. This didn’t make any sense to me. Claudia had been taking care of me, she even made me some pudding, so why was Chad throwing her in the cage and locking her in?

“Chad, what is going on?”

He shut the door and locked it. Probably to keep Ciara from seeing or hearing anything.

“I never should have left you alone. It left you vulnerable. A target. I never should have allowed any of this.” He was talking to himself more than to me. He seemed unhinged, but then again, he was almost always unhinged when it came to his family and their safety.

Chad ranted on and on, and I let him, not that I paid much attention to what he was saying. If I paid attention, it meant that I might interrupt him and that wouldn’t bode well for me.

“They’re going to die.”

Those words caught my attention. I hadn’t done anything wrong, and my husband and sister were going to pay for something that I couldn’t control.

“Did you hear me?”

I looked up at Chad, prepared to tell him that I heard him, but he wasn’t even looking at me. He was looking at Claudia. She had tears streaming down her face.
